One of the fun surprises of living in Africa is learning the sports that are played here. Sorry to say, but we are very sheltered in America with what most of the world considers the top sports played in the world… did you know that on Saturday they played the finals of the “Super 14” in Rugby? The atmosphere was like the Super Bowl or World Series!

Of course, soccer, is the number 1 sport played all over the world and is very big here; but some of the others that have been fun to learn are, Cricket, (the boys really love this one and have had the opportunity to play few times), hand ball, squash, but the big one right now is Rugby! Tyler has fallen in love with this sport and, after trying out and playing in a few games, has been asked to play for the Swaziland team that travels to South Africa, Botswana, and a few other places.

They just played what they call the “Super 14” it is the top 14 franchises in Rugby that play in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. New Zealand has been dominant for the past many years, but this year two South African teams made it to the finals, the Bulls and the Sharks.

This is the boys at one of the Bulls games a few weeks ago; they went down on the field after and played with the crowd, it was a “Once in a lifetime” experience! What a life!!

  3. I loved playing rugby in college. Sad I didn’t get to see it in person while we were in South Africa. While I’m not a fan of some of the environment, the team comraderie in rugby is unlike any other sport I have ever seen. May he be a light in that world and enjoy playing as well!
